Marianne Vos Withdraws from Road World Championships to Support Father

Posted : 24 September 2025

Three-time world champion Marianne Vos will not participate in this year’s Road World Championships in Rwanda, choosing instead to remain at home to care for her father, Netherlands coach Laurens ten Dam confirmed.

“Her father had surgery last week and was in the hospital. He’s doing well under the circumstances, but it’s been a very tense and hectic few days for Marianne. I called her and we both decided she’s staying home,” Ten Dam told Dutch NOS television.

Vos, 38, has an illustrious history at the World Championships, having competed in the women’s road race 16 times. She claimed the title in 2006, 2012, and 2013 and has finished as runner-up on six occasions.

Femke de Vries will take Vos’s place in the women’s race in Kigali on Saturday. Ten Dam praised de Vries’s current form, highlighting her recent second-place finish in the Tour de l’Ardeche, but stressed that Vos’s legacy cannot simply be replaced. “Marianne Vos isn’t necessarily replaceable. I don’t want Femke to step into those shoes or feel that pressure. But we do have a very strong new rider,” he said.
