Malaysia shocks seedings to secure round of 24 spot in ITTF World Team Championships

Posted : 20 February 2024

In a stunning turn of events at the ITTF World Team Championships 2024, Team Malaysia defied the seedings in Group 5 of the Women's Teams event, securing the second position and a spot in the round of 24. The decisive victory came when Lyne Karen emerged triumphant in the crucial matchup against Italy's Debora Vivarelli, leading Malaysia to a 3-2 team win and earning them a coveted ticket to the knockout rounds.

Despite the victory, the final group standings presented a complex scenario, requiring calculators to determine the outcome. Malaysia, Italy, and Puerto Rico all finished with two wins and two losses, and as each team had experienced 3-2 results against one another, the tiebreaker came down to the overall games. The meticulous calculations revealed that Malaysia secured the second position with the best games ratio at 21/18, trailing only behind Korea Republic in the group's standings.

Chang Li Sian Alice, entering the tournament as the group's 4th seed, expressed elation at the unexpected and joyous turn of events. Having suffered a 3-2 defeat against Puerto Rico in the previous match, the Malaysian team was thrilled to bounce back and secure their place in the round of 24. Looking ahead, Alice mentioned, “For the next round, we also haven’t known yet who is our opponent, so we just rest today first and fight again for tomorrow.”

The remaining knockout stage spot from the group went to Italy, narrowly edging out Puerto Rico with an overall games ratio of 19/20. Despite the disappointment of the lost match against Malaysia, Nikoleta Stefanova from Team Italy expressed gratitude for the opportunity to proceed to the round of 24 and emphasized the team's determination to make an impact in the upcoming matches.

Stefanova stated, “Our goal is to get in the round of 16, and we’ll fight. We’re not going to waste the chance we got. We still don’t know who we’re going to fight for tomorrow’s match, but we’re going to do our best and strive to win against the opponent team.”
