Mads Pedersen Wins Stage Three of Giro d'Italia as Mountain Goat Causes a Stir

Posted : 12 May 2025

Denmark's Mads Pedersen claimed a thrilling victory in a mass sprint on stage three of the 2025 Giro d'Italia, held in Vlore, Albania, on Sunday. This marked his second stage win after taking the opening day’s honors, further strengthening his position in the overall standings with a 9-second lead over Slovenian veteran Primoz Roglic.

Despite a challenging 10.7km climb earlier in the stage, the final stretch along the Adriatic coast provided the perfect setup for a high-speed finish. Pedersen surged ahead early, managing to hold off a late challenge from Corbin Strong, finishing in 3 hours, 49 minutes, and 47 seconds.

An unexpected moment in the race occurred midway when a mountain goat ran through the peloton, narrowly missing a collision with Dion Smith of Intermarché-Wanty. While neither the rider nor the goat were harmed, it added a touch of unpredictability to the day. Smith displayed impressive control to stay upright as the goat darted into his path.

Meanwhile, many of the sprinters were dropped 60km from the finish, and Saturday's time trial winner, Josh Tarling, led a breakaway but was eventually caught and dropped by the peloton on the final climb.

As the race continues, Roglic remains the highest-placed contender for the overall title, with Team UAE's Juan Ayuso trailing by 16 seconds. Other notable riders, such as Italian Antonio Tiberi, Simon Yates, Adam Yates, Richard Carapaz, and Egan Bernal, are within striking distance.

The race will now return to Italy after three days in Albania, with a rest day scheduled for Monday. The coming stages promise a mix of flat runs and tough climbs, with the decisive challenges of the final week set to determine the winner, particularly in stages 16 and 20, featuring Alpine climbs and the notorious Colle delle Finestre.
