Mads Pedersen secured his third win in the first five stages of the Giro d'Italia by triumphing in a reduced bunch sprint on Wednesday. The Danish rider narrowly held off Italy’s Edoardo Zambanini from Bahrain Victorious, who came close but had to settle for second place, while Britain’s Tom Pidcock finished third on the challenging hilly stage.
During the final climb, Pedersen fell behind as his teammate Mathias Vacek set a punishing pace, thinning out the peloton. However, Pedersen managed to fight his way back to the front in the last few kilometers, launching a powerful sprint on the uphill finish. Pidcock threatened to overtake him in the closing meters but lacked the energy to sustain the challenge, allowing Pedersen, now 29, to hold on for the victory.
Reflecting on the stage, Pedersen admitted the final 20 kilometers were extremely tough, especially the last climb where he struggled but remained hopeful. “I was behind but I knew it was still possible,” he said, explaining the effort it took to chase Vacek and still have enough left to win the sprint.
With this win, Pedersen extended his overall lead to 17 seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic and strengthened his hold on the points classification. While Thursday’s stage may offer another sprint finish that could see him retain the pink jersey, the arrival of the first mountain stage on Friday means he is likely to lose the general classification lead to one of the top contenders.
