Lyon Fires Australia to Brink of Ashes Victory

Posted : 20 December 2025

Australia are on the verge of an Ashes triumph after Nathan Lyon produced a decisive spell that dismantled England’s resistance late on the fourth day of the third Test at the Adelaide Oval. The off-spinner’s crucial wickets have set the home side within sight of retaining the urn.

Lyon claimed key scalps, including a reverse-sweeping Harry Brook, the influential Ben Stokes, and a stumping of Zak Crawley, which left England struggling at 194-6 in pursuit of a target of 435. Crawley had battled well with 85 runs, but Lyon’s sharp bowling proved irresistible.

With only four wickets remaining, Australia will return on Sunday aiming to take a 3-0 lead after three Tests, secure the Ashes in just 11 days of cricket, and complete a fourth consecutive home series victory against England.

The spinner’s impact came after England had begun to adapt to Australia’s tactics. In a brief revival, they showed intent to adjust their approach, recognising the high stakes for players like Crawley who were fighting for their positions and reputations.

Earlier, Australia had been dismissed for 349 in their second innings, with Travis Head scoring a commanding 170 and Alex Carey adding 72. Josh Tongue picked up 4-70 while Brydon Carse claimed 3-80, but Lyon’s late burst turned the match decisively in Australia’s favour.

England’s chase started poorly when Ben Duckett was dismissed in the first over, and Ollie Pope’s struggle, falling for 17, has put his place in the fourth Test under threat. Despite Crawley’s resistance, the genius of Lyon’s bowling curtailed any realistic hope of a comeback.

As Australia edge closer to victory, Lyon’s performance stands out as the defining moment of the day, proving once again his ability to turn matches in Australia’s favour and leave England facing a series defeat.
