Luke Mayo secured his first victory on the Betway Big Easy Tour after winning the ninth event of the season at Ebotse Links on Thursday. The Mount Edgecombe player shot a final-round score of one-under-par 71, finishing the tournament at seven-under and claiming a comfortable four-stroke win.
Reflecting on his triumph, Mayo expressed how significant the win was, especially after a tough start to the season. “The Big Easy is such a good feeder tour to the Sunshine Tour, and to win here is huge,” he said. The victory, following a second-place and a fifth-place finish in his last four events, solidified his position and almost guaranteed his Sunshine Tour card for the next season.
Mayo's win comes at a crucial point in the season, with just two events remaining before the play-offs. The top 12 players on the Order of Merit secure playing privileges for the Sunshine Tour, and Mayo now feels a significant weight has been lifted off his shoulders. “This win takes a lot of pressure off the last two events,” he shared, noting the increased importance of these final tournaments where prize money will be multiplied.
Throughout the tournament, Mayo stayed focused solely on his game, avoiding distractions from the leaderboard. “I just focused on my own game and what I could do,” he said, acknowledging the mental discipline that led to only three bogeys across the week. His victory at Ebotse Links has propelled him to fourth on the Order of Merit, putting him in a strong position with one regular season event left before the play-offs and final.
