Luis Carrera Takes Slim Lead into Weekend at FBC Zim Open

Posted : 09 May 2025

Mexico’s Luis Carrera, who emerged as the winner of the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School earlier this year, holds a slender one-shot lead at 11-under-par heading into the weekend at the FBC Zim Open. His impressive second round of 66 at Royal Harare Golf Club, capped off with two consecutive birdies, puts him in prime position in the opening event of the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour season.

Carrera’s performance reflects his strong intent as he begins his journey on the Tour. After posting a career-best 61 in the final round of Q-School, the young golfer has carried that momentum into the season opener.

He expressed his optimism about playing a full season on the Sunshine Tour, which he believes offers a solid pathway to bigger international opportunities, including the DP World Tour.

Joining Carrera near the top of the leaderboard is South African MJ Viljoen, who sits just one shot back at 10-under after carding a bogey-free 66.

Viljoen, who tied for sixth in last year’s event, kept his strategy simple by focusing on accuracy and consistency. He emphasized the importance of staying mentally grounded and sticking to his process as he eyes a possible win over the weekend.

Hennie Otto, who led after the first round, shot a 71 on Friday to drop into a share of third place at seven-under-par. Despite the slip, he remains in contention heading into the final rounds of the tournament. As the weekend unfolds, the spotlight remains on Carrera’s bid for a maiden Sunshine Tour victory.
