LTA Commits to Equal Prize Money at Queen’s, Eastbourne by 2029

Posted : 06 June 2025

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has pledged to achieve equal prize money for both men’s and women’s tournaments at Queen’s Club and Eastbourne by 2029. This commitment comes as the WTA event at Queen’s prepares to start with a prize fund of $1.415 million, which represents a voluntary increase of about one-third over standard levels. Despite this boost, the women’s prize money remains significantly lower than the men’s ATP tournament at the same venue the following week, which offers over €2.5 million.

Queen’s Club is hosting a women’s tournament for the first time since 1973, with British players Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter set to compete, though the event has yet to match the long-established men’s tournament in ticket sales and revenue.

The LTA faces a delicate balance between increasing prize money and investing in grassroots tennis, as last year’s summer events collectively incurred a £4 million loss. While the WTA has guidelines for equal prize money at major combined events by 2027, standalone tournaments like Queen’s have until 2033 to reach parity.

Eastbourne, which features both men’s and women’s events ahead of Wimbledon, currently offers the highest prize money for a WTA 250-level tournament at $389,000, but still falls short compared to the men’s prize pool. The LTA’s goal to bring prize money equality forward to 2029 reflects a strong dedication to supporting women’s tennis at both professional and community levels.

LTA chief executive Scott Lloyd emphasized the organization’s commitment to growing women’s tennis through this initiative, highlighting the importance of increasing the visibility and profitability of women’s events.

Fans will now have the opportunity to enjoy high-level men’s and women’s tennis on prominent stages, as the LTA aims to develop these tournaments into sustainable and equitable competitions. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance the profile of women’s tennis while maintaining support for the sport’s grassroots development across the UK.
