Louis Rees-Zammit: Ex-Wales rugby union winger signs with Kansas City Chiefs

Posted : 30 March 2024

Former Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has officially joined the Kansas City Chiefs, winners of consecutive Super Bowl titles.

The 23-year-old attracted interest from multiple NFL teams, engaging in discussions with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos.

Rees-Zammit, a participant in the 2024 international player pathway (IPP), transitioned to the Chiefs after leaving Welsh rugby just before the Six Nations tournament.

Expressing his excitement, Rees-Zammit eagerly anticipates engaging with Chiefs fans at Arrowhead Stadium, having signed a three-year contract with the team.

In addition to his contract, Rees-Zammit secured a guaranteed salary and a signing bonus, showcasing the confidence the Chiefs have in him.

With ambitions to play as both a wide receiver and running back, Rees-Zammit aims to secure a spot on the Chiefs' regular-season roster.

As one of 16 participants in the 2024 IPP, Rees-Zammit underwent an intensive 10-week program to develop the necessary skills for NFL success.

Having displayed his abilities at the University of South Florida's Pro Day, Rees-Zammit impressed scouts from all 32 NFL teams, particularly with his impressive speed.

Competing with the off-season squad, Rees-Zammit seeks to earn a spot on the Chiefs' final 53-man active roster for the upcoming season.

If not selected, Rees-Zammit may spend his first season on the Chiefs' practice squad, benefiting from rule changes allowing teams to promote international players during the season.

In the short term, Rees-Zammit may contribute as a kick returner, utilizing his size, strength, and agility, aligning with NFL rule changes promoting increased kick-off returns.
