Louis Oosthuizen is set to defend his Alfred Dunhill Championship title, an achievement he considers one of the highlights of his illustrious career. Last year, he triumphed by two strokes over fellow Major champion Charl Schwartzel in a thrilling final round, securing the win he had long desired at Leopard Creek, a course that had previously proven challenging for him.
Despite tough weather conditions in the final stages, Oosthuizen remains proud of his victory, particularly given Schwartzel's dominance at the course. "Beating Charl, who is king around this place, felt really good," Oosthuizen said ahead of this year’s event.
This year, the competition will be fierce, as the field includes a mix of top-tier professionals and promising newcomers from the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour. The championship has attracted eight of the last 13 winners, including Oosthuizen, Schwartzel, Ockie Strydom, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and other notable players such as Pablo Larrazabal, Brandon Stone, and Alvaro Quiros.
The field also boasts a number of Major champions, Presidents Cup participants, and rising stars, making for a highly competitive atmosphere.
Among the new faces to watch is Scotland’s Gregor Graham, who is making his professional debut after a successful amateur career, including wins at the South African Amateur Championship and Brabazon Trophy.
Other young talents include 20-year-olds Aldrich Potgieter and Wenyi Ding, both of whom are poised to make their mark on the DP World Tour. The event will also showcase the top amateur talent from GolfRSA, with South Africa’s No. 1 Astin Arthur and fellow top-ranked players Jordan Burnand and Daniel Bennett competing for the title.
Several seasoned veterans, including Schwartzel, Dean Burmester, and Larrazabal, are also eager to add their names to the list of champions. Schwartzel, a four-time winner of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, is particularly motivated after coming close last year.
Burmester, keen to join his close friends Oosthuizen, Schwartzel, and Branden Grace as a winner of the prestigious title, is determined to put himself in contention for the victory. Larrazabal, who won the event in 2019, is hoping for another magical moment in the Kruger National Park. The championship will be broadcast live on SuperSport throughout the weekend.
