Louis Albertse delivered an outstanding performance to claim the 2026 Telkom PGA Championship at Country Club Johannesburg on Sunday, securing a memorable three-shot victory and adding his name to South African golf history.
The 28-year-old closed the tournament with a four-under-par 68 to finish on 27-under-par, comfortably ahead of runners-up Kyle de Beer and Samuel Simpson, who both ended the competition on 24-under.
Albertse's winning total was particularly impressive, falling just one stroke short of the tournament's all-time scoring record of 28-under-par, established by Louis Oosthuizen during his 2008 triumph. His achievement also matched the second-best winning score in the competition's history, previously recorded by George Coetzee in 2011.
The victory marked Albertse's fourth Sunshine Tour title and provided a significant confidence boost following a challenging year in which he narrowly missed securing a DP World Tour card.
Reflecting on his success, Albertse admitted that missing out on a place on the main tour had been difficult to accept but described the championship victory as a rewarding moment in his career.
He also expressed happiness at winning in front of his family, highlighting the importance of their presence during such a special week.
Albertse entered Sunday's final round with a three-shot advantage and maintained control throughout the contest. He produced an eagle and a birdie on the front nine before dropping two shots on the back nine.
However, he responded with three additional birdies, including one on the final hole, to complete an impressive round and secure the championship.
De Beer finished alongside Simpson in second place after recording a closing 67. Simpson, meanwhile, signed for a 68 after producing three consecutive birdies towards the end of his round.
The result marked Simpson's second successive runner-up finish at the prestigious championship, having also finished second in the previous edition.
Albertse's winning caddie, Altus Kapp, was also recognised for his contribution, receiving the Medallion awarded to the championship-winning caddie.
Adding to the celebrations, tournament sponsor Telkom confirmed an extension of its partnership with the PGA Championship for another two years, ensuring its continued support for the prestigious Sunshine Tour event.
Albertse's triumph represents an important achievement in his career, particularly after a difficult season, while his near-record-breaking performance further highlights his quality among South Africa's leading golfers.
