Lizzie Deignan Leads Star-Studded Line-Up for Women's Tour of Britain

Posted : 21 May 2025

Several of Britain’s top female cyclists are set to compete in the Lloyds Women’s Tour of Britain this June, including the accomplished Lizzie Deignan. She will be joined by her Lidl-Trek teammate and Olympic silver medallist Anna Henderson, with the race scheduled to run across four stages in England and Scotland from 5–8 June.

Rising stars Cat Ferguson of Movistar and Imogen Wolff of Visma-Lease a Bike are also among the competitors, along with sisters Elynor and Zoe Backstedt, representing UAE-Team ADQ and Canyon-Sram Zondacrypto respectively.

Deignan, now 36, has announced this will be her final season before retirement, bringing an end to a remarkable career. Her achievements include two Tour of Britain Women titles and victories in prestigious races such as the first-ever Paris-Roubaix for women in 2021.

She also earned a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics. Reflecting on her past experiences, Deignan expressed how meaningful the Tour of Britain has been to her, calling this year’s participation a "bittersweet" farewell.

The UCI Women’s World Tour race promises strong competition, with world-class cyclists like Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes also participating. The route includes stops in Hartlepool and other parts of northeast England before culminating in Glasgow.

Young talents Ferguson and Wolff, both 19, have already demonstrated their potential—Ferguson by winning last year's junior world title and the recent Navarra Women's Elite Classic, and Wolff by securing a stage win and the white jersey at the Vuelta a Extremadura Femenina.

After being canceled in 2023 due to financial challenges, the Women’s Tour of Britain was revived by British Cycling and has maintained its reputation for equitable prize distribution. Unlike many races, it offers prize money equal to the men’s event relative to stage count. In contrast, even the top women’s race, the Tour de France Femmes, awards only a fraction of the men’s purse, highlighting ongoing disparities in the sport.
