LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil seeks up to $250m investment as league explores future funding model

Posted : 19 May 2026

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil has reportedly begun a fresh push to secure external funding, targeting two tiers of investors as the league looks to raise as much as $250 million in new capital in the coming period, according to Axios.

The development comes as LIV Golf prepares for a major financial transition, with its Saudi Arabian backers, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), expected to withdraw direct financial support after the conclusion of the 2026 season. Since its launch in 2022, the PIF is believed to have invested between $5 billion and $8 billion into the breakaway golf circuit, though the league has yet to become profitable.

Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia is now shifting its investment focus more toward domestic priorities, leaving LIV Golf to seek independent financial stability. The league is also said to be exploring ways to restructure its business model in order to continue operating in the long term.

LIV Golf has already faced scheduling disruptions, including the postponement of its New Orleans event originally planned for June. Organisers have indicated the tournament could return later in the year, but the delay creates a gap between LIV Golf Andalucia in Spain in early June and LIV Golf UK in late July.

Despite ongoing uncertainty, the league intends to continue operating and hopes that new investment could support profitability within the next two years. An initial funding plan of around $250 million is being promoted to potential investors as a pathway toward financial sustainability.

A secondary proposal involving an additional $150 million is also being considered, though it would depend on securing improved media rights agreements and potentially selling its 13 teams, each made up of four players. The future direction of the league may also impact star players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, and Tyrrell Hatton, who currently headline the competition.
