Emirates Lions head coach Jaque Fourie has addressed the sudden decline in form of last season’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship Player of the Year, Sanele Nohamba. Despite his struggles, Fourie is confident that Nohamba can regain his top form soon.
Nohamba, who was exceptional in both the 9 and 10 positions last year, has seen a significant dip in his performances this season. After playing a pivotal role in the Lions' success, he has started only two matches this season, often finding himself on the bench or excluded from the matchday squad altogether.
Fourie, however, revealed that Nohamba’s struggles were not related to any dissatisfaction about being overlooked by the national team but were rather tied to the loss of his father, Eric. This personal tragedy has had a profound impact on the player’s form.
“Our focus is always on fielding the best team each week,” Fourie explained. “We set high standards for our players. Sanele has been through an extremely tough period, but we believe he has the strength to overcome this and emerge even stronger.”
Despite Nohamba’s recent challenges, Fourie acknowledged that his performances haven’t met the team’s expectations. With numerous players competing for spots in the starting lineup, Fourie emphasized that the team must continue to select the best available talent.
"We know the quality Sanele possesses. The loss of his father has undoubtedly affected him, but we’re hopeful he will soon return to the level we all know he is capable of," Fourie said, showing belief in the player's eventual return to form.
Last season, Nohamba’s performances were instrumental in the Lions' success, contributing a total of 135 points. His ability to turn the tide in critical moments was a key factor in the team’s victories.
It is anticipated that Nohamba will not start in the upcoming match against the Stormers. Instead, Springbok Morne van den Berg, who has thrived since his call-up to the national squad, along with Nico Steyn, who can play both 9 and 10 and captained the team against the Ospreys, is expected to take the field.
