Lindsey Vonn Secures Third World Cup Podium in Val d’Isere Downhill

Posted : 20 December 2025

Lindsey Vonn continued her remarkable comeback by finishing third in the downhill event at Val d’Isere on Saturday. The 41-year-old, who recently became the oldest downhill World Cup winner, added another podium to her illustrious career, totaling 141 World Cup finishes on the podium.

Competing at Val d’Isere for the first time in eight years, Vonn completed the course in 1:41.89, just 0.35 seconds behind Austrian winner Cornelia Huetter. Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann claimed second place, rounding out a competitive field.

Reflecting on her performance, Vonn admitted to a minor error that may have cost her the victory. “I skied well in the middle and then on the bottom I was carrying a lot of speed. With the light, I didn’t quite see the terrain and I lost my balance. It cost me probably half a second or more, so I’m disappointed in myself for that mistake,” she said.

Vonn retired in February 2019 due to injury but made a remarkable return to competition in December 2024 after undergoing a partial knee replacement. Her comeback has been highlighted by consistent performances, proving she remains one of the sport’s top downhill competitors.

With the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics just 48 days away, Vonn is focused on adding to her four World Cup titles and building on her Olympic success, which includes one gold and two bronze medals. She also maintains a strong lead in the downhill standings, currently 69 points clear at the top.

Saturday’s race was part of the ongoing World Cup season, which features nine events before concluding with the Finals in Kvitfjell, Norway, on 21 March 2026. Vonn will return to Val d’Isere on Sunday for the super-G leg, aiming to continue her streak of podium finishes.

Her performance in Val d’Isere reinforces Vonn’s enduring status as a skiing icon and a serious contender for medals at the upcoming Winter Olympics, underscoring a career that spans over two decades at the sport’s highest level.
