Liadi powers Nigeria to podium with triple silver feat in Samoa

Posted : 01 May 2026

Nigeria’s presence on the international weightlifting scene received another boost as Liadi Taiwo delivered a commanding performance to secure three silver medals at the 2026 Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Apia, Samoa.

At a competition that featured over 500 athletes from more than 70 countries, held alongside the Universal Weightlifting Cup and the Commonwealth Championships, Liadi stood out with a display of strength and composure that reinforced her status as one of Nigeria’s most reliable performers.

Competing in the women’s 77kg category, she clinched silver in the snatch with a lift of 105kg, followed by another silver in the clean and jerk at 135kg.

Her combined total of 240kg sealed a remarkable treble podium finish, highlighting both her technical precision and competitive consistency.

This latest achievement adds to an already impressive résumé, building on her silver medal performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she also set a junior Commonwealth record in the clean and jerk.

Reacting to the performance, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation President, Ibrahim Abdul, described Liadi’s success as a reflection of deliberate investment in athlete development.

“This is a proud moment for Nigeria,” he said. “Liadi continues to demonstrate the quality and discipline we are nurturing in our athletes.

Her success shows what can be achieved with the right support system in place.”

He added that her medals go beyond personal accomplishment, serving as inspiration for emerging talents across the country.

Also speaking, federation secretary Apeh Melvina Ashinedu acknowledged the collective effort behind the team’s outing, thanking key stakeholders for their support and commitment to athlete success.

Liadi’s performance in Samoa not only adds to Nigeria’s medal tally but also signals the country’s steady rise in global weightlifting driven by resilience, preparation, and a growing culture of excellence.

The triple silver success by Liadi Taiwo cements her position as a dominant force in international weightlifting and highlights the effective developmental strides of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation. Her achievements in Samoa provide a significant morale boost for the national team as they continue to pursue excellence on the world stage.
