LGAN Launches Girls in Golf Initiative, Over 60 Young Girls Benefit in Abuja

Posted : 03 November 2026

The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has launched its Girls in Golf initiative in Abuja, with more than 60 young girls participating in a training programme designed to promote grassroots golf development and encourage greater female participation in the sport.

The programme commenced on Monday, November 2, at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja. It formed part of activities leading up to the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), one of Africa's major women's amateur golf competitions.

LGAN President and Chairperson of the AACT 2026 Local Organising Committee, Dr Lami Ahmed, said the initiative was designed to extend the impact of golf beyond competitive events. She explained that the association wanted to invest in young people and create opportunities for their personal and professional development.

Ahmed emphasised that golf should serve as more than a competitive sport. She described it as a platform for community development, social responsibility and giving back to society.

"We believe that charity calls on us to touch lives and invest in others. Golf is not just about playing the game; it is also about giving back to society," she said.

The LGAN president explained that introducing girls to golf at an early age would help build a stronger foundation for women's participation in the sport. She added that the programme would expose participants to new skills, build their confidence and introduce them to potential career opportunities.

Ahmed also highlighted the growing number of female caddies in Nigeria. She stressed the importance of creating structured development pathways that would allow more girls to participate in golf and explore professional opportunities.

According to her, the initiative would encourage participants to consider different career options within the industry. These include professional golf, caddying and other golf-related professions.

She also acknowledged the support of Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, founder of the Renewed Hope Initiative, for the programme and the 2026 AACT.

The First Lady had previously expressed support for LGAN's proposed Girls in Golf Legacy Project, which aims to introduce and mentor 300 girls in the sport. Her involvement reflects growing institutional interest in expanding opportunities for young female golfers in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Ahmed confirmed that preparations for the continental championship were progressing well, with participating teams from different African countries already arriving in Abuja.

The competition is expected to attract representatives from at least 20 African countries, providing a platform for female golfers to compete for continental honours. The championship is scheduled to take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club from November 4 to 6, within the wider AACT programme running from November 2 to 7.

Ahmed reaffirmed LGAN's commitment to using golf to promote youth development, women's empowerment and grassroots sports participation.

She also urged corporate organisations, sports administrators and other stakeholders to support initiatives that would make golf more accessible to young girls and create sustainable opportunities for their involvement in the sport.
