Lekki Scrabble Classic 2025 Set for September with N1 Million Top Prize

Posted : 07 September 2025

Organisers of the highly anticipated Lekki Scrabble Classic have confirmed that the 2025 edition will take place in Lagos from September 27 to 28, offering a top cash prize of one million naira. The tournament, renowned for its elegant setting and welcoming atmosphere, will feature two categories: Premier and Championship.

Players with ratings between 1300 and 2000 will compete in the Premier class, while those rated 0-1299 will contest in the Championship division. Participation is open exclusively to players licensed by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, making it one of the most prestigious scrabble competitions in the country. The 18-round tournament is rated by the NSF, the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), and the World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA).

Samuel Anikoh, President of the Lekki Scrabble Club (LSC), highlighted the club’s commitment to advancing the sport in Nigeria and nurturing young talents. “We are excited to announce the 2025 Lekki Scrabble Classic! Planning started immediately after the 2024 edition ended,” he said. Anikoh added that the current edition will improve on previous successes, providing a festival-like atmosphere and attracting a high number of entries, particularly ahead of the WESPAC World Championship in Ghana this November.

Anikoh also celebrated Team Nigeria’s recent achievements at the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia, where 14-year-old Sophia Ekeruche was named Best Female Player. He credited the LSC for giving young talents like Sophia their first tournament experience, citing her exhibition game with celebrity chef and scrabble enthusiast Hilda Baci at the 2024 Lekki Scrabble Classic.

The LSC president commended the efforts of players including Abdulqudus Olawale, Prestige Archibong, and Joy Eberechukwu for helping Nigeria achieve its best-ever outing at the international level. He emphasized the club’s ongoing commitment to providing exposure and opportunities for young players to excel and create memorable stories in the sport.
