Lekki Classics Raises Stakes Ahead of Africa Scrabble Championship

The 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics is set to bring together a record field of more than 300 players as competitors fine-tune their preparations for the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia.

The two-day tournament, scheduled for Sept. 26 and 27, will provide players, particularly those preparing for the continental championship, with an opportunity to test their strategies and competitive readiness.

Vice-President of the Lekki Scrabble Club, Charles Uzamere, said the timing of the tournament would make it an important preparatory event ahead of the Africa Scrabble Championship, scheduled for Oct. 22 to 25.

“The impact is going to be massive because this will give them the platform to compete and play before the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia,” Uzamere said.

“It will be a very good avenue to test their strategies and learn more before the African tournament.”

The expected turnout will make the 2026 edition the biggest in the history of the Lekki Classics, further highlighting the growing competitive profile of the tournament.

Adding to the stakes is a $1,000 top prize, which Uzamere said would provide another incentive for leading players from Nigeria and other countries to compete.

Participants will contest 18 games across two divisions in the tournament, which has received ratings from the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Pan African Scrabble Association and World English-Language Scrabble Players Association.

Beyond its competitive objectives, Uzamere said the Lekki Scrabble Club remained committed to contributing to the growth of the game in Nigeria and on the international scene.

He commended members of the club for their continued support and expressed confidence that the Local Organising Committee would deliver a successful tournament.

With the Africa Scrabble Championship less than a month away, the Lekki Classics is expected to provide players with valuable competitive exposure while adding another major event to Nigeria’s growing Scrabble calendar.

The tournament is supported by AGPC, Julyet Peters, Frontpage Couture, Elcrest E&P, Mindgames International, Loense International and Activebelles.
