Laurie Canter Earns Spot at The Players Championship After South African Open Runner-Up Finish

Posted : 03 March 2025

Laurie Canter has become the first golfer with past or present ties to LIV Golf to qualify for The Players Championship. The Englishman, who last played on the LIV Golf circuit in 2023, secured his spot by finishing as the runner-up at the South African Open on the DP World Tour. This result propelled him into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking, with a projected ranking of No. 42, ensuring his invitation to the PGA Tour's premier event.

Canter’s qualification comes as he has not participated in a LIV event for over a year, making him eligible under PGA Tour criteria. His previous appearances in PGA Tour events outside the majors include the 2021 WGC-Workday Championship, where he finished tied for 64th, and last year's Genesis Scottish Open, which was co-sanctioned by the PGA and DP World tours.

The 35-year-old golfer has gained momentum in recent years, claiming his maiden DP World Tour victory at the 2023 European Open in Germany and adding another title at the Bahrain Championship in February.

With The Players Championship set to take place from 13-16 March at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Canter now has the opportunity to test himself in one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. His rise through the rankings and recent successes on the DP World Tour underscore his growing presence in the professional golf scene.
