The 9th edition of the National Youth Games concluded in grand style at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, where Team Lagos emerged as overall champions, ending Delta State’s long-standing supremacy in the competition.
In a remarkable show of talent and determination, Lagos topped the medal table with 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals. Hosts Delta State, who had dominated the Games for years, settled for second place with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze. Edo State finished third with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals, while Bayelsa and Kwara completed the top five with 18 and 15 gold medals respectively.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented at the event by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised the Games as a reflection of Nigeria’s future. “What we have witnessed here in Asaba is the triumph of unity, resilience, and youthful potential. These young athletes are the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the Federal Government remains committed to nurturing their dreams and investing in grassroots sports development,” he said.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed pride in hosting the event, commending the athletes for their discipline and commitment. He emphasized the unifying power of sports, noting that the Games showcased the strength and potential of Nigerian youth.
Director General of the NSC and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Bukola Olopade, described the 2025 edition as a benchmark in terms of organization and competition. He acknowledged the support of the Delta State Government, stakeholders, and the Nigerian people, pledging that future editions would build on the success of this year’s Games.
The closing ceremony was marked by vibrant cultural performances, musical acts, and a colorful parade of athletes, bringing the curtain down on a historic event that signaled Lagos’ rise as the new powerhouse of youth sports in Nigeria.
