Lagos Upgrades Sports Facilities Ahead of National Intermediate Sports Festival

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival, with renovation works at major sporting facilities across the state progressing steadily.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during an inspection of ongoing rehabilitation works at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Agege Stadium and other sports facilities being upgraded ahead of the national youth sports event.

At Teslim Balogun Stadium, the governor expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, disclosing that the natural grass pitch had been completed, while the installation of the new tartan track was expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

He also inspected ongoing upgrades to the stadium’s indoor halls and swimming pools, which are part of the broader rehabilitation programme designed to improve facilities for athletes and sporting events.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos was determined to provide the next generation of Nigerian athletes with modern facilities capable of supporting their development and helping them compete with confidence.

“Lagos is ready and we look forward to welcoming the next generation of Nigerian athletes,” the governor said.

According to him, the state government has, over the past three years, invested substantially in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of sports centres in Surulere, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege and Badagry.

He explained that the investments were aimed at taking quality sporting infrastructure closer to young people while creating opportunities for them to discover, nurture and develop their talents.

The governor said the administration was also committed to changing the perception of sports among young Nigerians by creating an environment where talented athletes could pursue sporting careers as a viable future.

The ongoing rehabilitation of the facilities is expected to enhance Lagos’ capacity to host major national and international sporting events, while providing athletes with better venues for training and competition.

With preparations gathering momentum across the key venues, Lagos is positioning itself to host thousands of young athletes from across the country for the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival.
