The organisers of the maiden Rugby School 7s Tournament have confirmed that the competition will take place on Saturday, December 6, in Lekki, Lagos.
A total of eight men’s teams and four women’s teams will participate in the fast-paced 7s format.
Rugby School Nigeria, Lekki, the organisers of the event, stated that the tournament aims to promote grassroots development, inspire young athletes, and strengthen the competitive structure of rugby across Nigeria.
The one-day event, scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is free to attend, with mandatory registration required for all spectators.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Dr. Adam England, Director at Rugby School Nigeria, highlighted the long-term potential for rugby development in the country.
“If just 1 per cent of 180 million Nigerian youths take up rugby, that’s 1.8 million players. And if 1 per cent of those reach elite levels, you have a pool of 18,000 top athletes. That journey begins now — and it starts this Saturday with the inaugural Lagos Schools 7s.”
According to Dr. England, the tournament represents more than just competition; it marks the beginning of a long-term programme to expand rugby’s footprint, nurture elite talent, and establish a sustainable development pathway for boys and girls nationwide.
