Lagos Targets Sports Tourism Boost With Maiden National Taekwondo Team Championship

Lagos is set to strengthen its position as Nigeria’s leading sports destination as the state hosts the maiden Nigeria Taekwondo Club/Team Championship from Sept. 18 to 20.

The championship, scheduled for the National Stadium, Surulere, is being organised by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), with the Lagos State Taekwondo Association (LSTA) serving as host.

The competition will mark the return of a major national taekwondo event to Lagos after more than a decade.

Bukola Benson-Onibudo, Secretary of the LSTA, disclosed this in Lagos, saying the championship was expected to attract participants from across the country.

He said teams from states, clubs, universities and other institutions would compete for honours in different categories.

According to him, the championship will feature Team Kyorugi (Tag-Match Sparring) and Team Poomsae in both Senior and Junior categories.

Benson-Onibudo said the team-based format was designed to promote strategic thinking, teamwork, sportsmanship and healthy competition among athletes.

He described the championship as a major milestone in the development of taekwondo and an opportunity to expose young athletes to high-level national competition.

The secretary said the event would also support talent identification and provide clubs, universities and institutions with an avenue to showcase their taekwondo programmes.

He noted that the participation of hundreds of athletes, coaches, officials, supporters and visitors would have a positive impact on businesses within the state.

“Hotels, transport operators, restaurants and other businesses are expected to benefit from the influx of participants and visitors,” he said.

Benson-Onibudo said the championship would also contribute to improving coaching and officiating standards by exposing practitioners to modern team competition formats.

He said the event was in line with the Lagos State Government’s vision of establishing the state as Nigeria’s foremost sports destination.

Beyond the sporting contests, he said the championship would help deepen national unity by bringing athletes and officials from different parts of the country together.

Benson-Onibudo disclosed that more than N4 million had been earmarked as total prize money for the competition.

He added that medals and certificates would be presented to victorious teams and coaches, while special training gifts would go to the first 10 teams to complete their registration.

The LSTA and NTF have invited registered clubs, universities, institutions, state teams, athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors and taekwondo enthusiasts to participate in the championship.
