Lagos set to make history as Nigeria hosts first-ever African Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Nigeria is poised to break new ground in international sports as it prepares to host the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, marking the first time the prestigious tournament will be staged on African soil.

Scheduled to run from August 9 to August 14, the competition will bring together top fencing talents across senior, veterans, and U-23 categories from more than 24 Commonwealth nations.

President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, described the hosting rights as a major milestone not just for Nigeria but for the entire African continent, highlighting the country’s rising profile in the sport.

According to Samuel, Lagos is already gearing up to deliver a seamless and memorable championship, with arrangements covering venue readiness, logistics, athlete welfare, and strategic partnerships well underway.

“This is more than just a tournament; it is an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s organisational strength and passion for sports on a global stage,” he said.

Beyond the competition, the championships will also feature a pre-event international training camp, designed to boost athlete interaction and raise performance standards ahead of the main event.

Nigeria’s successful bid followed a rigorous 10-month process, edging out strong contenders including Australia. The victory was further strengthened by unified backing from African Commonwealth nations, underlining a shared vision to bring the event to the continent.

Samuel emphasised that the championships would serve as a platform for youth development, sports diplomacy, and cultural exchange, with a blend of competitive action and rich Nigerian hospitality.

Key partners supporting the event include Rugby School Nigeria, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and World Abilitysport, particularly in advancing the inclusion of para-fencing to promote diversity and equal opportunity in the sport.

While acknowledging private sector contributions, Samuel called for greater government support to ensure the event meets its full potential and leaves a lasting legacy.

The tournament, sanctioned by Commonwealth Sport through the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, will be held at Rugby School Nigeria in Lagos, selected for its modern infrastructure and accessibility.

With Nigerian athletes showing steady improvement through increased international exposure, expectations are high that the host nation will not only deliver organisational excellence but also make a strong impression on the piste.

The hosting of the Commonwealth Fencing Championships cements Nigeria's position as a burgeoning hub for international sports on the continent.
