Lagos schools set for thrilling Ikoyi Club Quomodo Swimming Grand Slam

Posted : 30 April 2026

Lagos is gearing up for an exciting showcase of young aquatic talent as Ikoyi Club 1938 prepares to host the 2026 edition of the Quomodo Inter-School Swimming Grand Slam.

The competition, now in its third edition, will bring together primary and secondary school swimmers in a structured two-leg format aimed at deepening grassroots development in the sport.

The opening leg is scheduled for May 9, with the concluding leg set for June 6, both taking place at the swimming pool section of Ikoyi Club.

The event is expected to attract a vibrant mix of emerging talents, school teams, and enthusiastic supporters.

Participants in the secondary school category will compete in two divisions — Junior Secondary School (JSS), featuring swimmers aged 10 to 14, and Senior Secondary School (SSS), for athletes aged 14 to 17.

Competitors will test their skills across all major swimming strokes, including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley, with race distances tailored to suit each age group.

Chairman of the Swimming Section at Ikoyi Club, Akinbulejo Onabolu, emphasized that the competition goes beyond medals, focusing on long-term athlete development and engagement.

He noted that the two-leg league system is designed to sustain interest throughout the competition, allowing schools to accumulate points across events in pursuit of overall honours.

“The format ensures consistent participation and creates a competitive environment where teamwork, discipline, and excellence are rewarded,” Onabolu said.

He further highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen swimming at the grassroots level by providing young athletes with a structured pathway to grow and compete.

At the end of the series, top-performing schools and outstanding swimmers will be recognised, adding an extra layer of motivation for participants.

With multiple events, medal opportunities, and strong backing from sponsors, the championship is shaping up to be both a developmental platform and a lively sporting spectacle in Lagos’ youth sports calendar.

The Quomodo Swimming Grand Slam stands as a vital pillar for identifying and nurturing future Nigerian champions in the pool. By fostering competitive spirit and technical growth, the event ensures that the next generation of aquatic stars is well-prepared for higher levels of the sport.
