Nigeria will host the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship, with Lagos confirmed as the venue for the continental event.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the development in a statement issued by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi.
The announcement was made in Abuja by the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mustapha Berraf, who said Nigeria earned the hosting rights because of its recent progress in sports development and successful organisation of major competitions.
Berraf commended the Federal Government for its commitment to sports, saying the country's achievements made the decision to award the championship straightforward.
"I want to thank the Federal Government of Nigeria for what it has been doing in sports in recent times.
"That is why we wasted no time in awarding Nigeria the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship," he said.
He also praised Nigeria's capacity to organise international events despite limited preparation time, recalling the successful staging of the Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta.
According to Berraf, the country accepted the hosting responsibility at short notice and delivered the championships after only three months of preparation.
"This can only be achieved by a country that is intentional and deliberate about its sports development drive," he said.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko described the successful bid as another important achievement in the Commission's drive to position Nigeria as a leading destination for international sporting events.
According to Dikko, attracting major competitions remains a key part of the Commission's strategy to stimulate sports development and grow the nation's sports economy.
"We are serious about boosting the country's sports economy.
"One way to achieve this is by attracting more international sporting events to Nigeria," he said.
The championship adds to Nigeria's expanding list of international events, coming after the country also secured the rights to host the 2027 Africa School Games.
Hosting the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship further reinforces Nigeria's growing reputation as a destination for major continental sporting events and reflects the country's continued investment in sports development.
