The 8th Lagos International Badminton Classics continued in thrilling fashion on Day Two at the Teslim Balogun Indoor Sports Hall, with 42 matches across four courts producing a mix of upsets, spectacular rallies, and memorable shot-making.
Athletes continued to praise the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) for its warm hospitality and seamless organization, which has helped the tournament gain both local and international recognition.
After a strong showing on Day One, India’s dominance slowed, particularly in the men’s singles. Kalagotla (India) advanced with a 21-12, 21-18 victory over Slovakia’s Drata, but other Indian players faced stiff challenges. Poland’s Kwinta (WR 165) stunned India’s Walter in a tight 21-17, 22-20 contest, while Indonesia’s P. Shujiwo ousted Negi (India) 22-20, 21-17 to secure a place in the Round of 16.
Nigeria’s campaign in mixed doubles suffered a setback as Jovita Chisom and O. Miracle fell 21-9, 21-5 to India’s Bhatnagar and Balachandra. In women’s singles, O. Obasanmi was defeated by India’s Shiagin in the Round of 16, ending her run in the competition.
Other highlights included Korea’s Park GE overpowering the Philippines’ Sreejith Parol to advance to the quarterfinals, while Japan’s M. Koja stunned India’s fifth seed Bharadwaj 21-15, 21-19 in a gripping match.
Indonesia’s Muhammad Yusuf (WR 342), continuing his giant-killing streak from Day One, defeated S. Dayanand (India) 21-12, 21-15, dealing another blow to the Indian contingent.
With quarterfinals and semifinals approaching on Day Three, the Lagos International Badminton Classics is building toward a dramatic climax as shuttlers from around the world continue their quest for glory.
