Lagos hosts crucial trials as Nigeria targets Armwrestling glory in Ghana

Posted : 10 April 2026

Nigeria’s quest for continental success in armwrestling shifts into top gear in Lagos, where the nation’s finest athletes are competing for a place on Team Nigeria ahead of a major international assignment in Ghana.

The Lagos Open 2026 Championship, running from April 9 to April 12, has evolved beyond a routine competition, serving as the official selection trial for the upcoming African Armwrestling Championship.

With slots on the national team at stake, the event has drawn top contenders from across the country, all aiming to secure qualification for the continental showdown in Ghana as a pathway to the 2027 African Games in Egypt.

President of the Nigerian Armwrestling Federation, Samuel Jackson, emphasized the importance of the trials, noting that only the most outstanding performers will earn the right to represent the country.

According to him, the federation is focused on assembling a formidable team capable of dominating on the African stage and securing qualification for the African Games.

He also acknowledged the vital role played by key stakeholders, particularly the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Lagos State Sports Commission, whose support has been instrumental in hosting the trials and advancing the sport’s development.

Jackson further called for increased backing from corporate organizations and private individuals, stressing that sustained investment is critical to unlocking Nigeria’s full potential in armwrestling.

As competition intensifies in Lagos, the stakes could not be higher. For many athletes, this is more than a championship—it is a defining opportunity to prove readiness for continental success and to carry Nigeria’s ambitions to Ghana and beyond.

The Lagos Open 2026 trials represent a pivotal moment for the sport in Nigeria, setting the stage for international recognition and competitive excellence. By identifying and nurturing the best talents during this four-day event, the federation ensures that Team Nigeria is well-equipped for the challenges ahead in Ghana. Continued support from the government and private sector will be essential as these athletes pursue their dreams of African Games qualification.
