Nigeria has stepped up preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games, with top sports administrators joining international stakeholders at a pre-Games meeting in Los Angeles, United States.
The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, represented the country at the gathering, which focused on coordinating preparations for the global sporting event.
Their participation signals Nigeria’s intention to begin early planning, strengthen institutional collaboration, and create the necessary conditions for athletes to compete effectively at LA28.
Olopade said Nigeria’s Olympic ambitions required deliberate planning and sustained engagement with international sports authorities long before the competition begins.
“Preparations for the Olympic Games cannot begin when athletes arrive at the competition venue.
“They begin with deliberate planning, strong institutional coordination, and early engagement with the Olympic movement. Nigeria's participation in this meeting reflects our determination to approach LA28 with purpose, clarity, and a clear focus on athlete performance.
“We want to build on the lessons of previous Olympic Games, strengthen our preparations, and ensure that our athletes have the support, facilities, and competitive opportunities they need to represent Nigeria with pride.
“Our ambition is not simply to participate, but to prepare thoroughly and compete with distinction,” Olopade said.
The joint participation of the NSC and NOC leadership also underscores the need for a unified approach to Nigeria’s Olympic campaign, particularly in athlete development, logistical planning, and access to competitive opportunities.
Effective collaboration between both institutions is expected to play a significant role in establishing a structured pathway for Team Nigeria ahead of the Games.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14 to 30, 2028, marking the third time the American city will host the Summer Olympics after staging the event in 1932 and 1984.
The upcoming edition will return the Games to Los Angeles after a 44-year absence, bringing together athletes from across the world to compete across multiple sporting disciplines.
For Nigeria, the pre-Games meeting provides an opportunity to engage with Olympic organisers, understand operational requirements, and address key considerations well ahead of the competition.
The NSC and NOC are expected to sustain their collaboration as preparations progress, with the ultimate objective of assembling a well-prepared Team Nigeria capable of delivering strong performances on the Olympic stage.
