La Reine Cycling Marathon Set to Debut in Akwa Ibom in October

The maiden La Reine Cycling Marathon will take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from October 26 to November 1, with professional and amateur cyclists expected from across Nigeria. The seven-day event is designed to promote cycling, wellness, fitness and sports tourism in the state.

Convener Imabong Umoh said the event would take the La Reine wellness initiative beyond the spa environment and into the wider community. She also said the marathon would provide a platform to showcase Nigerian cycling talent while promoting Akwa Ibom as a destination for the sport.

The competition will feature professional elite men's and women's categories, alongside amateur, junior, intermediate and veteran events. Fun riders will also participate, while skaters and power bikers are expected to feature in special displays.

The organisers said the race has been sanctioned by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and will follow international cycling standards. Other reports also identified the Union Cycliste Internationale among the bodies linked to the event's regulatory framework.

The main route has been extended from the initially planned 15 kilometres to 100 kilometres. Elite and amateur cyclists will complete four 25-kilometre laps, while fun riders will have 25-kilometre and 10-kilometre options.

The planned route will take riders from Arise Park through Nwaniba and Ring Road 3 before finishing at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The organisers expect the route to provide a platform for participants to experience parts of Uyo while competing.

Safety preparations are also in place ahead of the event. The organisers are working with the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Police, health authorities and emergency services, with ambulances, medical teams and road marshals expected to support the race.

Cash prizes and wellness packages will be available for participants, with full details expected to be provided in the riders' kits. Earlier information from the organisers also indicated that the event is intended to become an annual competition.

The marathon is expected to attract cyclists from different parts of Nigeria and contribute to Akwa Ibom's sports tourism plans. Organisers also want the event to expand its national reach, with participation from all 36 states targeted from next year.
