Kyren Wilson Overcomes Chris Wakelin to Reach UK Championship Quarter-Finals

Posted : 29 November 2024

Kyren Wilson admitted feeling anxious during his time in York, but he still delivered a solid 6-2 victory over Chris Wakelin to advance to the quarter-finals of the Victorian Plumbing UK Championship. The win moves Wilson closer to a second Triple Crown title, with just three more victories needed to claim the prestigious trophy.

Earlier this year, he made history by winning his first World Championship, defeating Jak Jones 18-14 in the final, and he has since followed up with triumphs at the Xi'an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open, both against world number one Judd Trump.

Despite the pressure following his major success, Wilson has shown no signs of a post-World Championship slump. He remains in excellent form, consistently performing at a high level and adding to his impressive career achievements.

His best performance in York came in 2021, when he reached the semi-finals, beating Ronnie O'Sullivan along the way before being defeated by Luca Brecel. Now, Wilson faces Englishman Michael Holt in his bid to return to the semi-finals.

It was a disappointing result for Chris Wakelin, who was hoping to build on his recent success. Wakelin had a breakthrough moment earlier this month when he cracked the world's top 16 for the first time after making a strong run to the International Championship final. Despite the loss, he can take pride in his qualification for the UK Championship, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Wilson’s victory was built on impressive breaks of 85 and 108, which helped him establish a 2-1 lead. Although Wakelin appeared to have the upper hand in the fourth frame, a missed black allowed Wilson to steal the frame and extend his lead to 3-1.

After exchanging frames, Wilson sealed the win with a 63 in the seventh frame and won the eighth to confirm his place in the quarter-finals. Reflecting on his performance, Wilson acknowledged his anxiety but noted that his preparation and cue action were key to his success, with each round offering improvement and momentum.
