Kwara Eyes 2028 National Sports Festival Hosting, Boasts Best Sporting Infrastructure

Posted : 17 June 2025

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Mogaji, has revealed that the state is considering a bid to host the 2028 National Sports Festival (NSF), 43 years after it last hosted the event in 1985. While acknowledging that Enugu State will host the 2026 edition, Mogaji expressed confidence that Kwara is fully prepared to organize a befitting festival in 2028, with or without his continued leadership.

Mogaji, who competed in the first edition of the NSF in 1973, highlighted Kwara’s superior sports facilities as a major strength. According to him, the state possesses a range of top-tier infrastructure, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, 10 glass-back squash courts—the only of its kind in Africa—dedicated halls for table tennis, basketball, and volleyball, as well as cricket and baseball facilities. He added that the Kwara State Sports Complex is so well-equipped that the entire festival can be hosted within it.

He also praised Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and his deputy for their consistent support of sports development in the state. Mogaji mentioned several examples of government-backed athlete sponsorships, including scrabble players, squash teams to Uganda and Zimbabwe, and Wushu Kung Fu athletes. This, he said, has led to Kwara’s strong presence in virtually all national tournaments.

Reflecting on the just concluded 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, Mogaji criticized the logistics and venue arrangement, stating that the widely dispersed locations hampered athletes' performances. He urged future hosts to invest in centralizing events within compact, well-equipped venues for better management and convenience.

Mogaji, who also serves as the patron of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Kwara State branch, concluded by reaffirming the state’s commitment to sports excellence. He expressed confidence that with continued government backing and well-maintained infrastructure, Kwara is in a strong position to host the NSF in 2028 and continue its rise as a sports powerhouse in Nigeria.
