Kjeldsen, Gonzalez Share Lead After Challenging First Round at Kaulig Companies Championship

Posted : 20 June 2025

Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen continued his impressive debut season on the PGA Tour Champions by tying for the lead with Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez after the first round of the Kaulig Companies Championship in Akron, Ohio.

Battling rain and swirling winds at Firestone Country Club, both players shot 3-under-par 67s on Thursday, managing their way through tough conditions that caused a delay in play. They are closely followed by former champion Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, and Steven Alker, who each carded 2-under 68.

Kjeldsen, 50, has quickly become a force on the senior tour, with top-10 finishes in each of his first three starts, including a playoff loss earlier this month. His opening round started slowly with two bogeys on the front nine, but he recovered with four birdies over the final 12 holes to post a 32 on the back. The Dane credited his ability to scramble and maintain momentum as the key to keeping his round together under difficult weather.

Gonzalez, 55, began his round on the back nine and turned at 1-over par before surging ahead with three straight birdies on holes 1 through 3. Despite a bogey on No. 4, he closed strong with birdies at 7 and 8. Afterward, he emphasized the importance of putting, saying it was essential to capitalizing on scoring opportunities, especially in tricky conditions at Firestone.

Meanwhile, 2019 champion Goosen stayed within striking distance by going 2-under on the front nine after a steady start. Stewart Cink mixed five birdies with three bogeys for an even 34 on both halves of the course, while Steven Alker slipped from an early 4-under start with two late bogeys. Defending champion Ernie Els struggled to find rhythm, finishing with a 2-over 72 to sit tied for 29th after day one.
