Kim Sei-young takes early lead at LPGA match play with impressive opening round

Posted : 04 April 2024

Kim Sei-young took an early lead in the LPGA Match Play tournament, carding a six-under par 66 on the opening day at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. The South Korean golfer, ranked 39th, displayed impressive form, birdying six of the first 10 holes. This performance marks a significant return for Kim, who hasn't secured an LPGA title since the November 2020 Pelican Championship.

The tournament, featuring a revamped format with three rounds of stroke play followed by weekend match play for the top eight players, saw Kim executing her game plan meticulously. Beginning with a birdie and maintaining consistency throughout the round, Kim showcased her strategic approach, opting for smart play over aggressive shots to secure a solid start.

Meanwhile, Rose Zhang and Danielle Kang emerged as strong contenders, finishing tied for second with rounds of 67. Zhang, displaying patience and exceptional iron play, birdied her last four holes, while Kang capitalized on a strong finish with birdies on four of the last seven holes.

With a shared ambition to excel in the tournament, both players expressed satisfaction with their performances and readiness for the challenges ahead, as they aim to contend for the title against a competitive field that includes players like Japan's Yuka Saso, Australia's Minjee Lee, and Sweden's Anna Nordvist, who finished tied for fourth on 69.
