Kigali Hosts First UCI World Road Championships in Africa

Posted : 18 September 2025

Rwanda, famously known as the “land of a thousand hills,” is set to make cycling history as its capital, Kigali, hosts the first UCI World Road Championships ever held on African soil.

The week-long event kicks off this Sunday with the women’s and men’s elite time trials, attracting thousands of spectators eager to cheer on riders through the country’s scenic and challenging routes.

The climax will come a week later with a grueling 265km men’s road race, where Tadej Pogacar is considered a strong favorite.

While the championship represents a major milestone for cycling and Rwanda, the choice of venue has sparked controversy. Human rights organizations have criticized the decision, citing Rwanda’s proximity to the conflict-affected Democratic Republic of Congo and its government’s alleged backing of the M23 rebel group.

Security concerns have been highlighted in the lead-up, but UCI president David Lappartient remains confident, emphasizing the opportunity to globalize cycling and inspire the next generation of African athletes.

Top competitors will line up in Kigali despite some notable absences. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel enters the men’s time trial as the favorite to secure a third consecutive gold over the 40.6km course starting at the BK Arena.

Pogacar, meanwhile, is focused on the road race, where the demanding hilly circuit promises to test even the most seasoned riders. Other potential challengers include Australia’s Jay Vine, Dutch rider Thymen Arensman, and Mexico’s Isaac Del Toro.

On the women’s side, American Chloe Dygert is tipped to win the time trial, following Grace Brown’s retirement. The elite road race will see Dutch star Demi Vollering lead a strong team, though France’s Pauline Ferrand-Prevot could provide stiff competition. With 13 world titles on offer across all categories, the event promises to be a showcase of skill, endurance, and tactical brilliance on African terrain.
