Kevin Roy Sets Career-Best Round to Lead Puerto Rico Open

Posted : 07 March 2025

Kevin Roy delivered a career-best performance at the Puerto Rico Open, shooting a 10-under-par 62 to take the first-round lead at Grand Reserve Golf Club. He edged Chris Gotterup by a single stroke, after Gotterup, who was also at 10 under, bogeyed the par-4 18th.

Davis Riley and Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen finished at 8-under 64, while Australia’s Karl Vilips secured fifth place with a 7-under 65. A weather delay in the afternoon halted play for an hour and 17 minutes, leaving 24 players unable to finish their rounds before nightfall. They will complete their first rounds early Friday, though none were positioned better than 6 under.

Roy, competing in just his 38th PGA Tour event, regained his tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour last year and started strong on the back nine. He recorded six birdies before adding another on the first hole, reaching 7 under through 10 holes.

Despite a bogey on the par-4 eighth, he maintained his momentum with a series of birdies. His standout moment came at the par-3 seventh, where he holed out from a greenside bunker immediately after the weather delay. Reflecting on his round, Roy credited his accuracy and putting, saying everything was falling into place.

The tournament serves as an alternate event for players who didn’t qualify for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Gotterup, who won his first PGA Tour title at the Myrtle Beach Classic last season, showcased his aggressive playstyle by reaching the par-5 14th green in two and sinking a short eagle putt. Initially hesitant to play due to a packed schedule, he credited his father and agent for convincing him to participate, a decision he now appreciates.
