Kesha Louw Wins South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play in Thrilling Play-Off

Posted : 26 February 2025

Kesha Louw reaffirmed her dominance in South African amateur golf with a dramatic comeback victory in the South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship. Battling challenging weather conditions at PE Golf Club – The Hill in Gqeberha, the 18-year-old held her composure as she overcame early leader Lisa Coetzer in a play-off.

Coetzer, who had led through the first two rounds, struggled after the turn, allowing Louw to capitalize with two late birdies to force a tie at six-under 210. A steady performance in the play-off secured Louw’s triumph, cementing her status as GolfRSA’s No. 1 amateur.

Despite an early setback, Louw’s experience proved crucial as she adjusted to the worsening conditions. She remained patient as Coetzer’s lead evaporated, with the latter making costly mistakes on the back nine. Louw, known for her low-trajectory drives, used her familiarity with tough weather to her advantage, maintaining composure as rain and wind intensified.

A decisive birdie on the 16th hole brought her level with Coetzer, and after both players finished tied, Louw edged her opponent in the play-off with a composed approach and a crucial par save. Reflecting on her win, she expressed relief and joy, acknowledging that her recent tournaments had not gone as planned but that this victory was a dream fulfilled.

Meanwhile, Mogomotsi Sebata claimed the B-Division title with a four-shot victory, securing the Abe Bailey Trophy. Despite a 14-over-par 86 in her final round, she finished ahead of Mexico’s Ana Catarina Weber Albaitero and Gemma Huxham. Sebata, a second-year Applied Mathematics and Statistics student, admitted that she had previously played the event for experience but entered this year with a clear goal to win.

With stroke play concluded, the focus now shifts to the South African Amateur Championship match play rounds, where Louw will face Lucia Mhlabane and Sebata will take on Odette Booysen. Looking ahead, Louw expressed excitement for match play, relishing the opportunity to take a more aggressive approach.
