Kenyan Ngeera Wins on Debut at Awa Ibraheem Junior Golf Competition

Posted : 21 October 2025

Kenyan golf prodigy Justine Ngeera has won the 12th Awa Ibraheem Junior Golf Competition on his first appearance at the tournament held in Lagos.

The World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event took place at the Ikeja Golf Club, Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja, and featured young golfers from Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon.

Ngeera expressed pride in his achievement, describing the victory as a dream come true.

“I thank my parents for giving me the chance to play here. It’s a great competition on a good course,” he said.
“I found out about this event online, and since my family was coming to Nigeria, I begged to join them.
I’ve been playing golf for about seven years, and this is my first international win. I focused on my game, and thank God it went well.”

Ngeera’s triumph makes him the first international player to claim the top prize in the tournament’s history.

In the boys’ category, Nigeria’s Matthew Ayin finished second, while Uno Ogoh placed third.

In the 14–16 girls’ category, Akafu Ebehi from Benue State took first place, followed by Peace Aduma and Sharon Okolo.

For the 12–13 boys, Lewis Dandyson from Rivers State emerged winner, with Orungbeja Mayomile and Caleb Dada finishing second and third respectively.

In the girls’ 12–13 category, Josephine Benjamin clinched first place, while Makareem Adams and Danielle Olanrewaju came second and third.

The boys’ 9–11 group was won by Wilson Izang, followed by Fortune George and Emmanuel Adah, while the girls’ 9–11 group saw Toluwase Balogun finish ahead of Funmilayo Oyero and Yvonne Dorm from Ghana.

In the 6–8 boys’ category, Melvin Strasser from Lagos emerged winner, with Adama Ogoh and Marzuk Adams placing second and third.

Chief sponsor Awa Ibraheem praised the steady growth of the competition, highlighting its impact on youth golf development across Africa.

“This is the 13th year of organizing this program, but the 12th edition because we missed one year,” he explained.
“Our main goal is to encourage young people to play golf and promote the game at the grassroots level.
We started with only Nigerian players, and now we have participants from Cameroon and Ghana. This is the only junior golf ranking event in Africa.”

Ibraheem added that international winners would receive their prize money in U.S. dollars, and expressed gratitude to sponsors and parents for their continued support.

The winners went home with cash prizes, one-year scholarships, and giant trophies for their outstanding performances.
