The Kaduna Golf Club is set to come alive as no fewer than 210 golfers tee off in the third edition of the FirstBank Golf Tournament, reaffirming the growing appeal of the sport in Northern Nigeria.
The competition, which began on March 26, has drawn a strong field of both professional and amateur golfers, all eager to test their skills and gain valuable exposure on one of the region’s most recognised courses.
Speaking, Idris Ibrahim, Group Executive, Retail Banking North at First Bank of Nigeria Limited, highlighted the bank’s deep-rooted commitment to sports development, particularly golf, which it has supported for over six decades.
Represented by Abdullahi Abubakar, Ibrahim noted that the bank’s continued sponsorship of the Kaduna-based tournament since 2023 reflects a broader vision of strengthening communities through sport.
He emphasised that the initiative goes beyond competition, serving as a platform to nurture talent, encourage networking, and promote core values such as discipline, integrity, and resilience—qualities that mirror the institution’s philosophy.
According to him, the tournament is part of the bank’s First@sports initiative, designed to sustain legacy sports like golf, while creating opportunities for emerging talents across Nigeria.
“This competition is not just about winning trophies; it is about building connections, encouraging excellence, and sustaining the rich tradition of golf,” he stated.
On his part, club captain Nazifi Jibril expressed confidence in the tournament’s organisation, noting that multiple categories—including men’s, ladies, veterans, and super veterans—would ensure inclusivity and heightened competition.
He also revealed that the event, initially postponed last year, would officially commence with a ceremonial tee-off involving representatives of both the club and the sponsoring bank.
Jibril praised FirstBank’s unwavering support, describing it as a key driver in elevating the standard of golf within the region. He added that the club remains committed to strengthening its relationship with the bank through continued collaboration.
As anticipation builds, the tournament promises not only fierce competition but also a celebration of sportsmanship and community engagement in Kaduna’s golfing circle.
The successful rollout of this year's edition reinforces the vital role of corporate partnerships in maintaining Nigeria's sporting heritage. With 210 players competing across various categories, the event stands as a significant milestone for the Kaduna Golf Club and the growth of the game in the North.
