Justin Rose Believes Open Championship Dream Is Still Within Reach

Posted : 14 July 2026

Justin Rose believes he still has time to achieve one of the biggest goals of his career as he returns to Royal Birkdale for the 154th Open Championship. The Englishman, now 45, insists winning the Claret Jug remains his greatest ambition despite an already distinguished career that includes a major title, Olympic gold and a stint as the world's top-ranked golfer.

Royal Birkdale holds special memories for Rose, who burst onto the international stage there in 1998 when, as a 17-year-old amateur, he holed a memorable pitch shot on the final hole to finish tied for fourth. Although he turned professional immediately afterward and endured a difficult start with 21 consecutive missed cuts, that breakthrough remains one of the defining moments of his career.

Rose returns to the famous links course with an impressive résumé that includes the 2013 U.S. Open title, the 2016 Olympic gold medal and numerous victories around the world. Yet the Open Championship is the one trophy he feels is still missing, and he believes the nature of links golf gives experienced players a chance to contend well into their careers.

The former world No. 1 acknowledged that, while he would have loved to collect more major championships and even challenge for a career Grand Slam, he has no regrets about what he has accomplished. Rose said he is proud to have remained competitive for nearly three decades and considers his longevity at the highest level one of his greatest achievements.

With The Open returning to the venue where his career first captured global attention, Rose hopes the story can come full circle. An English victory would also end the nation's long wait for an Open champion, with Nick Faldo the last home winner in 1992.
