Judd Trump booked his place in the Shenzhen Open quarter-finals with a 5-2 victory over China’s Si Jiahui on Thursday, setting up a high-profile meeting with Mark Selby. The world number two produced breaks of 80, 71, 53 and 54 during his last-16 victory.
Trump’s progress was briefly disrupted by an unusual incident involving the LED advertising display positioned behind the table. With Trump leading 4-2, the screen suddenly flashed blue as he attempted to pot the yellow, momentarily affecting his concentration.
The Englishman recovered his composure, cleared the remaining colours and completed the victory. Earlier in the match, the players had also agreed to a re-rack after neither could make significant progress in a difficult frame.
Trump said crucial moments can determine matches at this stage of a tournament and acknowledged that he had not always converted such opportunities during the current and previous seasons. He will now face Selby in a best-of-nine-frame quarter-final on Friday.
Selby reached the last eight after defeating Stephen Maguire 5-3, compiling a highest break of 99. The four-time world champion won the China Open in August and will provide a major test for Trump in Shenzhen.
Elsewhere, reigning world champion Wu Yize defeated Ricky Walden 5-3 to arrange a quarter-final against Shaun Murphy. Murphy advanced with a 5-1 win over Elliot Slessor, while Yuan Sijun beat Zak Surety 5-2.
Jimmy Robertson also moved into the last eight after a 5-0 victory over Scott Donaldson. Chris Wakelin eliminated Neil Robertson 5-2, while Michael Holt produced a 126 break during his 5-2 victory over Kyren Wilson. The result sent Holt into his first ranking-event quarter-final since the 2024 UK Championship.
The Shenzhen Open is being staged at the Bao’an Sports Centre in China from September 28 to October 4, with the quarter-finals scheduled for Friday.
