Judd Trump Defeats Kyren Wilson to Win Second Shanghai Masters Crown

World number one Judd Trump made an impressive start to the 2026-27 snooker season by defeating defending champion Kyren Wilson 11-6 to capture his second Shanghai Masters title. Trump took control of the final after building a commanding 7-3 lead during the opening session before finishing the job in the evening to secure the prestigious invitational crown.

Wilson, who lifted the trophy in 2025 after overcoming Ali Carter, made the brighter start to the final. However, Trump quickly found his rhythm, producing breaks of 73, 62 and a superb 67 clearance to recover from a 66-point deficit and edge the sixth frame on the final black. The victory shifted the momentum firmly in his favour as he won several consecutive frames to establish a comfortable advantage before the interval.

After the restart, Trump extended his lead to 8-3 before Wilson responded with the first century break of the final, a classy 103. The defending champion reduced the deficit further by taking two more frames, but Trump remained composed in the key moments, winning crucial frames on the black and pink to move within one frame of victory.

Wilson refused to surrender and kept the contest alive with an outstanding 134 clearance. Nevertheless, Trump closed out the match in the 17th frame to reclaim the Shanghai Masters trophy and collect the winner's prize of £210,000, while Wilson received £105,000. As a non-ranking event, the tournament did not award ranking points despite featuring many of the world's top players.

Following the victory, Trump expressed his satisfaction at defeating Wilson, noting that his rival had come out on top in several recent finals between them. He added that winning the opening event of the season in Shanghai gives him confidence for the months ahead, recalling that his previous Shanghai Masters triumph was followed by an excellent campaign.

The triumph also marked an encouraging return for Trump after his disappointing exit at the World Championship earlier this year. On his route to the title in Shanghai, he defeated Barry Hawkins, John Higgins and reigning world champion Wu Yize before overcoming Wilson in the final.

Attention now turns to the first ranking event of the new season, with the China Open returning to the World Snooker Tour calendar for the first time since 2019. The tournament will be staged in Taiyuan from 8-16 August, where Trump opens his campaign against Thailand's Noppon Saengkham, while Wilson will face Ireland's Aaron Hill in the opening round.
