JT Poston Opens Four-Shot Lead at Memorial Tournament After Storm Delay

Posted : 07 June 2026

JT Poston emerged as the clear frontrunner at the Memorial Tournament after completing a delayed third round on Sunday morning, building a four-shot advantage over fellow American Ryan Gerard at Muirfield Village in Ohio.

The tournament, hosted by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, was disrupted by thunderstorms on Saturday, forcing players to return early on Sunday to finish their rounds. Poston handled the interruption impressively, carding a three-under-par 69 to move to 12-under 204 through 54 holes.

The American entered the weather delay tied for the lead with Gerard at nine under par. Once play resumed, Poston maintained his composure, saving par at the sixth before picking up birdies at the seventh and eighth holes. Although he dropped a shot at the ninth, he regained momentum on the back nine with three consecutive birdies from the 13th hole, extending his lead despite a bogey at the 16th.

Gerard was unable to keep pace. After resuming play, he bogeyed the sixth but recovered with birdies at the seventh and 10th. However, costly mistakes late in the round, including bogeys at the 16th and 17th, left him four shots behind Poston on eight-under 208.

Poston, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on Monday, is chasing the fourth PGA Tour title of his career and his first victory since winning the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas in 2024. Gerard, meanwhile, is seeking his second PGA Tour triumph after claiming the Barracuda Championship last year.

American Sam Burns sits alone in third place at nine-under 209, while fellow American Wyndham Clark and England’s Tommy Fleetwood share fourth on eight-under 210.

Elsewhere, reigning US Open champion J.J. Spaun posted a strong 68 to reach six-under 212 as he continues preparations for his title defence later this month. World number one Scottie Scheffler completed a 68 to sit on five-under 213, still hoping to make history by becoming the first player since Steve Stricker to win the same PGA Tour event three consecutive times.

Meanwhile, world number two and reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy finished his third round with a 71 and remains further back on three-under 216 heading into the final day.

Tournament organisers adjusted the final-round schedule, sending players out in groups from both the first and 10th tees in an effort to ensure the competition concludes before sunset. With a four-shot cushion in hand, Poston will enter the final round in a commanding position as he seeks another PGA Tour victory.
