Team Edo’s Joy Kimiakigha has called for improved training facilities and structured development programmes following her gold medal success at the 2nd Niger Delta Games.
The 18-year-old Political Science student of Benson Idahosa University clinched gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke, describing the championship as a defining moment in her young swimming career.
Kimiakigha said the Games provided a valuable platform to compete against top athletes across the region, boosting her confidence and sharpening her competitive edge.
While expressing gratitude to the organisers, she urged stakeholders to introduce a post-Games training tour—either national or international—for outstanding performers. According to her, such exposure would sustain momentum, enhance technical development, and prepare athletes for bigger competitions.
She also appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission and Dunamis-Icon to maintain long-term investment in sports, noting that consistent support is essential to produce future champions from the Niger Delta.
The Edo swimmer credited her success to disciplined preparation, the guidance of her coach, and the backing of the Edo State Sports Commission.
With her sights set on representing Nigeria internationally, Kimiakigha expressed confidence that continued support and hard work will help her realise that ambition.
She described the Niger Delta Games as a springboard for greater achievements, pledging to keep striving for excellence while balancing her academic and sporting pursuits.
