Jordan Spieth Quietly Pursues Career Grand Slam at Star-Studded PGA Championship

Posted : 13 May 2025

While much of the attention heading into this week’s US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow is focused on dominant world number one Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau’s LIV Golf resurgence, and Rory McIlroy’s Grand Slam triumph, Jordan Spieth arrives with a quieter narrative.

Despite the noise around other players, Spieth’s pursuit of the career Grand Slam continues—one that has remained elusive despite his early brilliance and consistent presence in the sport. A decade ago, Spieth burst onto the scene with wins at the Masters and US Open, and by 2017 he added the Open Championship to his tally, leaving just the PGA Championship missing from his collection.

Now 31, Spieth enters his ninth attempt at completing the Grand Slam not as a headline favorite but with signs of upward momentum. Three top-10 finishes in 2025 suggest a player regaining form, and those close to him believe it’s only a matter of time.

His former college coach John Fields describes him as “a bomb waiting to go off,” implying that another win could ignite a fresh wave of dominance. Though he hasn’t won since April 2022, Spieth’s pedigree and sheer determination keep him in the conversation, even if he isn’t the center of attention.

Fields has followed Spieth’s journey since the golfer’s teenage years, recognizing his potential early on. The University of Texas coach recalls recruiting him when he was just 13 and being immediately impressed by his skill and mentality. Spieth made history in his junior years, becoming only the second golfer after Tiger Woods to win multiple US Junior titles.

Before even starting college, he had already competed in PGA Tour events, hinting at the professional stardom to come. For Fields, landing Spieth was a defining moment—he still remembers the exact time and date the young prodigy committed to Texas.

Though Spieth spent just over a year in college, he helped Texas claim a national title in 2012 before turning professional. His quick rise and early achievements, including three major titles by 24, showcased a rare mix of talent and mental toughness.

According to Fields, what sets Spieth apart isn't just his technical ability but his relentless drive and unshakable belief in his potential. That same belief continues to fuel him as he quietly chases history, ready to seize the moment if it finally arrives at Quail Hollow.
