Jordan Spieth’s opening round at The Players Championship was a rollercoaster, with the three-time major winner navigating a mix of highs and lows on his first nine holes. Spieth posted two eagles, two birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey over the front nine, showcasing a volatile start to his round.
His day began positively with an easy birdie on the par-4 10th after hitting an approach shot just 14 inches from the pin, and an eagle at the par-5 11th following a chip-in from a greenside bunker. However, the momentum faltered as he encountered trouble on the back nine.
Spieth’s back nine included a bogey on the 17th but was countered by a birdie on the 18th, leaving him at 2-under-par for the day with a final score of 70.
Despite the ups and downs, Spieth remained focused on the bigger picture, acknowledging that his off-the-tee performance was a key factor in his fluctuating play. "I just wasn't very tight off the tee today," Spieth admitted after his round.
"And out here, eventually that will hurt you." Nonetheless, his ability to recover with eagles and birdies demonstrated his resilience on the course.
The 31-year-old, who is coming off offseason wrist surgery, has shown promising results in recent events, including a T4 finish at the WM Phoenix Open and a T9 at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches.
While he remains confident in his game, Spieth's last PGA Tour victory came at the RBC Heritage in April 2022, and he now finds himself ranked 65th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Despite the inconsistency in his play, Spieth’s experience and determination could see him recover as the tournament progresses.
