Jordan Cox's Injury Raises Doubts Over England Test Call-Up

Posted : 05 May 2025

Essex batter Jordan Cox will undergo a scan on Tuesday to assess a side injury that may jeopardize his potential inclusion in England’s Test squad to face Zimbabwe. The 24-year-old had to retire hurt on 103 during day three of Essex’s loss to Somerset after appearing to injure himself while playing a shot.

Cox, who did not return to the field after walking off, had shown promising form before the incident. Essex's director of cricket Chris Silverwood noted that it was too early to determine the extent of the injury, though everyone on the field heard his cry of pain when it happened.

The injury marks another unfortunate setback for Cox, who was previously poised to make his England debut against New Zealand last year before a broken thumb ruled him out. Silverwood praised Cox’s latest century on a challenging pitch as proof of his ability, expressing confidence that his international opportunity will eventually come.

With wicketkeeper Jamie Smith back from paternity leave, Cox was considered a backup batter for the upcoming series. His 103 against Somerset followed another strong showing earlier in the season, including an 82 against Nottinghamshire.

If Cox is unavailable, England may consider replacements, though options are somewhat limited. Jacob Bethell, who stepped in for Cox in New Zealand and impressed with consistent fifties, is currently playing in the Indian Premier League.

Potential alternatives include Durham’s Ben McKinney, who is recovering from a back spasm, and Somerset's Tom Banton, whose early-season form has dipped. Other contenders are James Rew, who starred against Essex and has been in recent Lions squads, and Tom Haines, the leading County Championship run-scorer this season with 513 runs and two centuries.
