Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan delivered a commanding finish in the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphiné on Monday, clinching the win in Issoire and claiming the overall leader’s yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar.
Standing at 1.93m and weighing 87kg, Milan struggled to stay with the pack on the hilly 204.6km course through central France but surged ahead in the final sprint. The victory not only earned him a 10-second time bonus but also the race lead due to a tie-break advantage over Pogacar, who slowed deliberately near the finish.
Britain’s Fred Wright and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel completed the podium in second and third, respectively, while top contenders like Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, and Remco Evenepoel remained safely in the main group.
Pogacar, who had taken the opening stage and led after day one, eased off at the end to allow Milan the overall lead and accompanying media duties. Milan acknowledged his Lidl-Trek teammates for helping him rejoin the lead group after being dropped earlier in the stage, calling the race “really tough.”
Monday’s drama unfolded against the backdrop of the eight-day Dauphiné serving as a critical warm-up for the Tour de France. The stage also featured a heartfelt moment from Romain Bardet, who briefly attacked on the final climb near his hometown fan club in one of the last races of his career.
He was caught with 10km remaining as Milan’s team set a relentless pace. Bardet will look for redemption on Tuesday when the third stage starts in Brioude, his home town, continuing the challenging route toward Charantonnay.
