Jonathan Broomhead Makes Strong Title Defence with Share of Sunbet Challenge Lead

Defending champion Jonathan Broomhead made an impressive start to his title defence at the Sunbet Challenge Time Square Casino, carding a seven-under-par 65 to earn a share of the first-round lead at Wingate Park Country Club.

The South African sits alongside compatriots Shaun Norris and Daniel Cronje, as well as Chile’s Gabriel Morgan, after an exciting opening day in a highly competitive field.

Broomhead's flawless display featured six birdies and a spectacular eagle, with his only blemish being a single dropped shot.

The highlight of his round came on the second hole, where he struck a precise approach before draining a lengthy 45-foot putt for eagle.

He credited both solid ball-striking and confident putting for giving him an excellent platform in the 54-hole tournament.

The leaderboard remains tightly packed after the opening round. DP World Tour winner Michael Hollick is just one stroke behind the leading quartet, while fellow tour champions Thriston Lawrence and George Coetzee remain well within striking distance, trailing by two and three shots respectively.

Broomhead said a fast start is particularly valuable in a three-round event, especially as he seeks to successfully defend the title he won last year.

After returning from Europe several weeks ago, he took time to reset before focusing on improving his game, and believes that work paid off in his opening-round performance.

With two rounds remaining, the defending champion is well positioned to challenge for another Sunshine Tour victory.
